1999 wrangler winshield defrost not wrking correctly??

the air comes out of the little side vents that blow on the side windows located above the regular vents, but wont blow on the main windshield... every time i switch it from floor or vents to windshield i hear a thud like a door closing then it only comes out the little side vents, so i know its not a vacuum leak or anything ....
