Were Gerry and Kate McCann devout Catholics prior to Madeline's abduction?

I think it's important to know if they were practicing or not as it gives an insight into the believability of their public persona. If they didn't participate in the church to the same extent before the abduction one could speculate on their motivation in presenting themselves as devout Catholics.
