Why choose a shallow partner and expect a deep and meaning full relationship?

ok...for a start I tend to get on better with women than guy's so my opinion is admittedly clouded, however I have noted amongst friends and others that they claim to want a deep and meaning full relationship yet they seem to gravitate towards guys who appear to be plastic and shallow. Does a deep personality put them off?
