What do firemen do after they get the fire out?

A house 4 doors away caught fire tonight. The firemen and police have been tromping in and out of the house for hours and hours since they got the fire out. What are they doing? They are dumping stuff on the front lawn. Why? I think that the woman who lives there died in the fire, but they haven't brought her out. Why not? Would an ambulance get her, or? I just keep hoping that it's not true, that she wasn't home. And please is it possible that if she died, she died in her sleep of smoke inhalation and did not suffer? I hope she didn't suffer. I am not trying to be morbid, just reeling, trying to process all this. Thanks for any light you can shed. I need to find ways to put my mind at least at some peace, and I don't want to bother the firemen or the police.
