How to hook up tachometer on 94' 2.3 4 cyl?

Hooked up this tack on my 92' ford ranger that has a 94' 2.3L 8 plug 4 cyl motor, it seems to be hooked up right but it reads 3,000 when the rev limiter kicks in, that seems to low to be right, Do these motors really run that low rpm's or is it hooked up wrong?
